A Limpopo policeman died in a shootout when a group of armed men attempted to rob a filling station in Burgersfort, Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the officer was one of the policemen who rushed to the robbery scene on Friday at about 10.30am.

This after the police received a tip-off that a group of eight men were on a mission to rob a filling station in the area.

"On arrival at the scene the suspects exchanged fire with the police. In the ensuing gun battle an officer was shot dead," Ramatseba said.

The officer has been identified as Micaso Mandye, 35, of Madiba Park, outside Polokwane.

By Saturday at about 2am the police had managed to nab the suspects who had escaped during the shootout on Friday when the other four were arrested.

The police shot one of them dead and seriously wounded another.

An unlicensed 9mm pistol was seized from the suspects

Meanwhile, acting Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Benny Ntlemeza has warned criminals that this kind of incident would not be tolerated in the province.
