Illicit marketing out

Organisers of the Comrades Marathon have warned that illegal advertising will not be tolerated .

The 89-kilometre race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban takes place on Sunday, May 24.

The marathon's general manager, Gary Boshoff, said that companies, publications, advertisers and individuals who advertise illegally will be taken to task by the Comrades Marathon Association.

''Unfortunately, ambush marketing is a fact of life these days. Sponsors and suppliers invest considerable sums of money, manpower and products in the race and we cannot permit other products and services to use the race as a platform. We will be obliged to use the law to act against them. The most usual one is to erect banners or other advertising material on the route," Boshoff said.

He said sometimes advertisers use the Comrades name and even its logos to advertise.

"No advertiser may use the Comrades name and/or logo without permission,'' said Boshoff.
