There were squeals of happiness when Mama Angel donated much needed blankets to children affected by the Aids epidemic at the Hope Children's Centre in Soshanguve.
The centre, a non-profit organisation, is run by Dr Ella Maponya. It also looks after children at the risk of physical and emotional abuse. Its purpose is to care and support Aids orphans and vulnerable children in a home-based, community context .
Many children have lost at least one parent to Aids and there is an urgent need to help, care and protect these children.
The centre cares for children from needy homes in 10 primary schools.
It helps 100 Aids orphans and 50 vulnerable children whose numbers rise daily.
"The centre feeds the children, pays their school fees, and provides food parcels and health care for those in need. We expect to build a daycare for children in stable families," said Maponya.
"We are thankful to Sowetan for the blankets. The number of needy children keeps rising."
