In the first attack on the ruling party by an alliance partner since the elections, the SACP wants to force the ANC to fire a newly appointed MEC.

Free State SACP spokesperson Sam Matiase told Sowetan yesterday that the tripartite alliance had agreed in a recent meeting to appoint SACP provincial secretary Phel Parkies as MEC for local government and housing.

But premier Ace Magashule appointed Parkies as chief whip instead.

Matiase described Magashule's cabinet as "disgusting" and said it was a show of "contempt of the highest order to the alliance partners".

He said Magashule's actions "reveal a leadership style hell-bent on steering this province on a dangerous path of recurring discords, divisions and deceit".

"We asked them why they did this but they could only say that the ANC provincial executive committee overruled whatever was decided at the alliance meeting," said Matiase.

The SACP says if Magashule does not convene another meeting and appoint Parkies as MEC they will ask the ANC national leaders to intervene.

ANC spokesperson Tebogo Fikisi said the ANC would meet the SACP and Cosatu today but would not back down from their decision.
