Three months ago no one would have believed that the general secretary of the SACP would ever cross fellow communists and acknowledge that the Education Minister had no power to boot out University of South Africa vice-chancellor Barney Pityana.
But with power comes a fresh appreciation of the niceties of governance.
The freshly ensconced Minister of Higher Education this week scorned his erstwhile youth league's demands to can the free-speaking and independent-minded academic, who of late has been cosying up to Cope.
