One of South Africa's most exciting defenders, Lucas Thwala looks set to sweep the boards at the Orlando Pirates end-of-season awards function in Benoni tomorrow night.

Thwala, who is also in the Bafana Bafana squad for the Confederations Cup, should walk away with the player of the season and players' player of the season awards.

He is also the club's top goal scorer on eight goals. Teammate Katlego Mashego has rattled the net nine times, but six of those goals were for Pirates and three when he was still playing for SuperSport United, who successfully defended the Absa Premiership title at the weekend.

Midfield magician Teko "The General" Modise, who also had a great season, also came close with six goals.

Thwala is also a strong contender for the Premiership player of the season and players' player of the season awards.

Pirates ended the season second on the log, qualifying for the 2010 African Champions League.

Chairman Irvin Khoza will also present special awards to various players and officials who were outstanding for the club this season.

l United's management will honour their players at the end-of-season awards ceremony in Midrand on Thursday night.

The main awards, player of the season and players' player of the season, will be hotly contested by Morgan Gould, Elias Pelembe and Anthony Laffor.

Exciting winger Daine Klate, despite being plagued by injuries, also did well to help United defend their league title.

Just like at the Pirates event, United's chairman Khulu Sibiya - himself a former Bucs player - will also present special awards to various people at the club.
