New method to control climate

Publisher: Atlantic Books

Reviewer: Namhla Tshisela

Hardly a day goes by without "climate change" and "global warming" being bandied about.

Cities worldwide were plunged into darkness as millions switched off their lights for an hour recently to mark "Earth Hour".

Tree planting missions to counter carbon emissions generated as a result of industries are also on the increase.

Author of Slow-tech: Manifesto for an Overwound World and marine biologist Andrew Price, however, argues that such initiatives are not enough to counter the damage that has already been done.

Price refers to this as "robustness", a quality he argues has been lost to an obsession with "efficiency" under the guise of frenetic development.

His argument for low-tech methods such as changes to agriculture is convincing but highly unlikely that they would be fully embraced as long as the frenetic need for expansion and progress is not curbed.
