The Indaba trade and travel show at the Durban's Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre has honoured a KwaZulu-Natal couple KwaZulu-Natal couple for their contribution to the development of tourism in the rural areas.
The story of the humble beginnings to great achievements of Mlungisi and Sebenzile Nzuza begun five years ago when they entered the industry, making their mark by establishing the first hotel in the rural Nongoma on the north of the province. They now own three hotels.
They were yesterday honoured by Tourism KwaZulu-Natal for their contribution.
During the launch of their third hotel the couple related the story of how they started their first hotel in an area where no one thought it was viable.
Their first hotel, Nongoma Inn, started with only 10 rooms and doubled the rooms in the first year of business.
Two years later they had raised enough money to start their second hotel, Mbazwana Inn, also in the rural part of the province
Mlungisi Nzuza said the idea of starting an accommodation facility came after they realised that more tourists were visiting heritage sites and game reserves in the rural areas.
Nzuza said although business had been difficult at the beginning, they are now confident of the future as their hotels were now doing well.
Tourism KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Lihle Dlamini said for the tourism industry to grow it needed people who have vision such as the Nzuzas.
Nzuza has over the years received a number of awards including service excellence awarded by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for arts, culture and tourism last week.
