Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale presented what appears to be a well-balanced cabinet during the swearing-in ceremony held at the Lebowakgomo legislative chambers yesterday.

The team, which includes five women, is a mix of of experienced members and newcomers.

Mathale also ensured that a number of his appointees came from rural backgrounds to better represent the interests of the underprivileged.

Of the 10 MECs announced yesterday, only three could be referred to as "tried and tested" members of cabinet, with two of them retaining their positions.

The Limpopo legislature also appointed Rudolf Phala, former chairperson of the standing committee on public accounts, as speaker and Miriam Ramadwa as his deputy.

Ramadwa is an experienced trade unionist who serves on the provincial executive committee of Cosatu.

Among the other 49 members of the provincial legislature who were sworn in yesterday was former premier Sello Moloto, who left the ANC to join Cope, which won seats during the general elections.
