Athletics South Africa announced a strong provisional team this week - 24 men and nine women - to compete in the ninth African Junior Championships in Mauritius from July 30 to August 2.

The team was selected after the recent Yellow Pages South African Youth and Junior Championships on March 27 and 28 in Pretoria, which included some of the finest junior talent in the country.

Several of the team members have already made their mark in major international competitions as well as the recent Yellow Pages series. The team is again expected to bring back a major medal.

Caster Semenya, South Africa's bright prospect in the middle distances, and Tazmin Brits, one of the leading junior javelin throwers in the world, will lead the medal onslaught among the women.

In the men's team athletes such as Waide Jooste, Ethan Floris and Patrick Vosloo in the sprints; Cornel Fredericks in the hurdles; and Boipelo Mothlathlego, Dewald van Heerden, Stephan Brink and Ulrich Damon in the field events will line up as favourites in their respective events. - Sapa
