A doctor being held in jail for raping at least two patients was employed by the state at two of Johannesburg's biggest rape treatment centres.
Ninadu Paul Mafulu, 49, is alleged to have committed the first rape in 2007 while he was head of the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital rape treatment centre. But nothing came of the charge.
He then moved to the Hillbrow centre, where he is alleged to have committed the same offence last year. This time his alleged victim was a 22-year-old who had been gang-raped.
The first complainant allegedly went to Mafulu for an examination in 2007 after she was raped. He examined her and told her to return because he had found fluid in her vagina that he had to drain.
At the second examination, the doctor allegedly fondled her under the pretence of trying to remove the liquid. He allegedly told her he had not succeeded in removing it all and advised her to visit him again. This allegedly happened repeatedly.
The second alleged victim laid a charge against him at the Protea police station, prompting the first victim to come forward, support the claim and proceed with her initial charge.
The Gauteng health department suspended Mafulu late last month after the DA's health spokesperson Jack Bloom took up the matter with health MEC Brian Hlongwa.
Magistrate Etienne van Niekerk rejected Mafulu's bail application at the Randfontein regional court, saying that Mafulu posed a risk to the aggrieved women and other possible victims.
Mafulu is from the Democratic Republic of Congo but now lives in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg. Van Niekerk said the doctor was a flight risk because he was a foreigner.
