The former mayor of Musina in Limpopo was found dead in a hotel in Polokwane yesterday.
David Phologa was found dead by cleaners at the Holiday Inn Hotel after he failed to book out after 11am.
Phologa had booked a room in the hotel on Monday but failed to hand in the keys at the expected time.
Phologa's wife Sarah, 35, said her husband had left home on Monday to attend a course in Polokwane on municipal capacity building. He was representing the Vhembe districtmunicipality.
She said Phologa had been diagnosed with high blood pressure last month.
"My husband was attacked by the disease on April 22 and was rushed to a family doctor, who said he had high blood pressure.
"Since then, he was never himself again. But because of his love for working for the community, he insisted on going to work everyday.
"Little did I think that his trip to Polokwane to attend his service delivery course was his trip to heaven," Sarah Phologa said sobbing.
Phologa was the eldest child of Selina and Isaac Phologa, and was born on February 20 1969 in Musina.
He attended Onwaudi Primary School in the early 1970s and proceeded to Musina High School in 1985.
He obtained a teaching diploma in 1990 and started teaching at Musina High School in 1992r.
He was elected mayor for the Musina municipality in 1998, and when his term ended in 2006 he was seconded to the Vhembe district municipality, where he was a member of the mayoral committee until he died on Monday.
Polokwane police spokesperson Mohlaka Mashiana confirmed Phologa's death and said the police had opened an inquest docket.
Phologa is survived by his wife, two children - Kagiso and Sadae - mother, father and his brother Dan.
He will be buried on Sunday at Nancefield Cemetery.
