ANCYL president Julius Malema says President Kgalema Motlanthe should be Jacob Zuma's deputy, or else people will think that he has been marginalised.
He was speaking at a press conference yesterday where the league endorsed housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane as Gauteng's premier-elect.
The youth league in Gauteng had previously expressed its support for acting premier Paul Mashatile.
Yesterday Malema said the league was within its right to express its preferred candidate but "after several discussions with the ANC's Gauteng provincial executive committee we accepted the decision by the National Executive Committee".
Malema said Motlanthe should be Zuma's deputy because this was what was decided at the 2007 ANC Polokwane National Conference.
He, however, said the league would accept the decision taken by the NEC regarding the deputy presidency.
Meanwhile, the league has called for the party's former provincial secretary, Lebogang Maila, 29, to be appointed into Mokonyane's cabinet. Maila is the youngest member of the provincial legislature.
