A guide to rating accommodation

Star grading is an independent assessment of what guests can expect to find at an accommodation establishment or conference venue. It's based on the overall quality and takes into account the facilities you'd expect to accompany a particular star grading.

The star grading runs from one to five, with five denoting the very best of quality. The schemes take into account the type of accommodation - hotel, guest house, country house, bed & breakfast, backpacker & hostelling, camping and caravan park or conference facilities (MESE).

So you can have a five-star B&B as well as a five-star hotel, as long as they both offer the highest quality appropriate to each category.

One star

l Acceptable quality in the overall standard of the furnishings, service and guest care.

l Clean, comfortable and functional accommodation.

l Guests should expect a continental breakfast or quick, cooked and simple breakfast.

l Soap and bath towel in the bathroom.

Two stars

l Good quality in the overall standard of the furnishings, service and guest care.

l Guests should expect a continental breakfast, and limited variety of cooked food items should be available.

l Soap as well as hand and bath towels in the bathroom.

Three stars

l Very good quality in the overall standard of the furnishings, service and guest care.

l Guests should expect a continental breakfast with an extensive variety of cooked food.

l The bedrooms should be more spacious and additional furniture such as a desk.

l The bathrooms should have at least one shower gel, wrapped soap as well as shampoo in addition to hand and bath towels.

Four stars

l Superior (excellent) quality in the overall standard of the furnishings, service and guest care.

l A fully cooked breakfast must be served over an extended period.

l Guests can also expect to be served at the table if they so desire.

l The bedrooms must have a working area and a study desk.

l Guests can expect 18 hours of room service available at their disposal.

l The bathrooms should have amenities such as shower gel, wrapped soap, shampoo, hair conditioner, body lotion, shower cap, bath sheet and face cloth in addition to hand and bath towels.

Five stars

l Exceptional quality and luxurious accommodation matching best international standards.

l Highest standards of furnishings, flawless service and meticulous guest care.

l Guests should expect 24-hour room service.

l Breakfast and a variety of cooked food should be available all day and can be served in guests' rooms.

l Eating area must provide a service to guests at the table.

l Bedrooms must have a working area and desk.

l Bathrooms must have a shower gel, wrapped soap, shampoo, hair conditioner, body lotion, shower cap, bath sheet and face cloth in addition to hand and bath towels.

l Most five-star hotels have health and beauty facilities.

l Internet access, fax facilities.
