The KwaZulu-Natal provincial House of Traditional Leaders has threatened to boycott the election of a new leadership of the house scheduled for Friday.
The province has 11 houses of traditional leaders in all the district municipalities.
But the current leadership has threatened not to take part in the process.
The chiefs are suspicious that Mike Mabuyakhulu, MEC for local government and traditional affairs, is trying to oust present chairperson and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Mabuyakhulu and Buthelezi were involved in a legal dispute after the former forced Buthelezi to choose between the position of chairperson of the house or his party, the IFP.
Buthelezi took him to court and won.
Traditional House deputy chairperson inkosi Mpiyezintombi Mzimela said yesterday: "The KwaZulu-Natal government is doing as they please about us.
"The government has no respect for traditional leadership."
