A trip to a party ended tragically for a 30-year-old man when he was stabbed to death with a broken beer bottle on Saturday.

The victim, Lucky Mothadi, was stabbed several times in the neck and stomach at Moletji outside Polokwane. He died instantly.

Police said the motive for the fight was not known, but patrons who were at the gig and spoke to Sowetan on condition of anonymity said the deceased was involved in a fierce argument with another man.

The sources said the deceased told the man that he was not allowed to set his foot in the area as he was not from there.

"The deceased produced a knife and threatened to stab the man if he did not leave the area.

"But the man picked up a beer bottle, broke it and stabbed him several times in the stomach until he collapsed," said the sources.

Seshego police spokesperson Mathemane Malefo said police were investigating a case of murder against the suspect, who was arrested a few hours after the incident.

He will appear in the Seshego magistrate's court soon.
