Overhaul public service

It is commendable that the media is exposing the problems that people are experiencing at Home Affairs offices across the country.

It is commendable that the media is exposing the problems that people are experiencing at Home Affairs offices across the country.

The Home Affairs Department is mandated with the very important responsibility of providing documents to citizens of South Africa and also to foreign nationals.

A small mistake, due to incompetence or disregard for policies and procedure, could have far-reaching consequences for individuals.

Similarly, poor service delivery at the traffic department and hospitals could also result in people's human rights being violated.

We should also expose the bad service that people experience at other government departments and institutions through the media, to keep government officials on their toes.

For instance, the inefficient licence booking system that has been adopted by Gauteng's transport department is fraught with incompetency.

There is a lack of coordination between the department's call centre and the various testing stations. The queues are too long, fees are unreasonable and last but not least, corruption is rife.

I welcome the proposed public service ministry with open arms. It's time that people have recourse for their grievances.

Manti Bokaba, Tshwane
