A police sergeant allegedly went berserk and fired several shots at a group of people, including two children aged two and three.

The 38-year-old policeman, who is attached to the Secunda police crime prevention unit, was driving along Rapporteer Street in Louis Trichardt when he is alleged to have pulled another car off the road at about 10.30pm.

He was driving his own vehicle and was off duty.

He is alleged to have produced a firearm and pointed it at the passengers of the vehicle.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Superintendent Abie Khoabane told Sowetan that three men, a woman and two children, were in the vehicle at the time.

"While the officer was pointing the firearm in the direction of the victims, our patrol van happened to be driving along the street.

"The driver of the victims' car flashed his lights to attract the attention of the police vehicle," said Khoabane.

"The two police officers stopped immediately.

"But then the officer fired several shots at the victims, injuring the woman in the right arm," Khoabane said.

The policeman was immediately disarmed and arrested.

Khoabane said the motive for the shooting was still not known.

The sergeant is expected to appear in the local magistrate's court today.

He is expected to face six charges of attempted murder, among other charges,Khoabane said.

Khoabane said the service pistol would be sent to Pretoria for ballistics tests.

Meanwhile, a policeman who allegedly shot and killed a 17-year-old Grade 11 pupil in a classroom on January 29 appeared briefly in the Mhala magistrate's court on Thursday.

Inspector Kringer Jimmy Kubayi was not asked to plead to a charge of murder.

The case was postponed to June 17.

Kubayi is attached to Mhala police station and is a former teacher.

The victim, Sedi Khoza, was in class at the Manukuse High School when several police officers arrived in search of two men who were supposedly in possession of a firearm.

When the students jumped out of the windows of the classroom Kubayi allegedly fired a shot that ricocheted off a wall and hit Khoza in the face, killing him instantly.
