The net closed in on a rogue police officer and his two accomplices after they traced a robber and allegedly shared stolen money they found buried in Hlobane in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

It's alleged that Constable Gideon Mayise, stationed at Hlobane, stole the money that was robbed in Germiston, Gauteng a few months ago.

Mayise and his co-accused, Lucky Mthimkhulu and Thandanani Mthethwa, were nabbed after a police investigation established that they were in collusion and had kidnapped an individual whom they discovered had stolen money.

The trio made a brief court appearance last week, charged with defeating the ends of justice, armed robbery and kidnapping.

Police spokesperson Jay Naicker said "the money that was allegedly stolen by Mayise, Mthimkhulu and Mthethwa is between R30000 and R35000".

The accused remain in custody until their next court appearance on Thursday.
