Police have been urged to act swiftly to arrest the killers of an ANC supporter, who also injured seven others who were celebrating the party's election victory.

Zimisele Hlongwane, 19, was part of an ANC victory motorcade that was ambushed as it drove through the Swayimane area in the Midlands on Monday.

The attack came within days of the ANC scoring a landslide victory in last Wednesday's elections.

Police spokesperson Director Phindile Hadebe said two suspects had been arrested. "One was found in possession of a firearm. Another suspect was also arrested for being in illegal possession of a firearm."

ANC spokesperson Nomfundo Mcetywa said: "This is the latest in a string of attacks orchestrated by a bitter lynch mob who cannot accept the democratic will of the people of KZN who unequivocally chose the ANC to serve them for the next five years."

She said supporters were also attacked in Ulundi, allegedly by IFP members who stoned the ANC's constituency offices. Three ANC members were seriously injured.

The IFP's Albert Mncwango said it was irresponsible of the ANC to point fingers at his party.

"We denounce any kind of violence. The IFP has not instructed anyone to attack people or encouraged acts of violence."
