In two weeks' time the newly formed government led by by President Jacob Zuma will hold its first cabinet Lekgotla to come up with an implementation plan.

This is where the government is also expected to give some flesh to the structure of the proposed planning commission

The structure - which will be located in the Presidency - is aimed at monitoring government performance.

Several senior cabinet ministers in the new government are expected to be on the commission. Names bandied around to head the structure include finance minister Trevor Manuel, ANC head of policy Jef Radebe and ANC national executive committee member turned business mogul Tokyo Sexwale.

Yesterday Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven said Cosatu supported the formation of such a structure, which would hold minister's accountable when it comes to service delivery.

Craven said the commission would ensure the ministers adhere to national priorities as articulated in the ANC election manifesto.

SACP spokesman Malesela Maleka said the SACP was also in favour of such a structure. "What we want is to enhance the government's plans in place," said Malesela.
