While final votes have not yet been tallied, ANC supporters in Mpumalanga celebrated and the DA was confident it would remain the official opposition in the province after Wednesday's general elections.
By late yesterday the ANC was leading with 754293 votes, followed by the DA's 743347. Cope was in the third place with 24660 votes.
Since Wednesday ANC supporters have blocked Brown Street - where the provincial ANC offices are situated - blowing vuvuzelas and chanting slogans.

Meanwhile, the ANC in Mpumalanga has distanced itself from a list containing new faces for the next executive council.
According to the list, Clifford Mkasi is tipped to be health MEC, Cosatu secretary Norman Mokoena is to be MEC for public works, Sibongile Manana is destined for education, while Matthews Phosa's wife Pinky is earmarked to become MEC for economic development and planning.
Screamer Skhosana is apparently destined for finance, Refilwe Mtswene for local government and housing, while Violet Siwela will be agriculture and land administration MEC.
Vusumuzi Shongwe is tipped to become roads and transport MEC, currently held by Jackson Mthembu, who will apparently be moved to safety and security.
In reality, the ANC wants David Mabuza to become the premier and Siphosezwe Masango the speaker.
But Lucky Ndinisa, ANC provincial secretary, said: "We will only meet next week to discuss the names of the new executive. I want to tell the public, that list is fake."
