Self-proclaimed multi-millionaire Mandla Mthembu could find himself behind bars after he allegedly defaulted on maintenance payment for his two children and former wife for the past three months.

Sowetan is in possession of summons issued by the Johannesburg family court instructing Mthembu, 54, to appear in court on May 18.

A source said: "Mandla seems to have cash flow problems. One month he has cash and the next he is broke."

Mthembu married controversial TV actress Khanyisile Mbau after divorcing his former wife Dolly Matshabe in 2006.

As part of the divorce settlement, the South Gauteng Court in Johannesburg ordered Mthembu to pay R4000 maintenance a month for Matshabe and their two daughters.

According to court records, Mthembu owes R12000.

Matshabe confirmed yesterday that the last time she received the maintenance money was in January.

Mthembu said he was overseas last month and "will sort them out".

It is understood that Mthembu contacted Matshabe this week telling her to give him two weeks to raise the money.

This is not the first time Mthembu has had a brush with the law.

In 2007, he was arrested for failing to pay maintenance.

In August last year, he ran into trouble with the bank over payments for one of his two Lamborghini sports cars. Officials from Absa's tracing department visited Mthembu's previous addresses to try to get hold of the car after he defaulted twice.

Racing against time to stop the story being published, Mthembu, renowned for his expensive lifestyle, had to settle the outstanding R76000.

Each sports car is worth R4million.
