First time voter Palesa Moeketsi was excited to vote with former president Thabo Mbeki and celebrities.

Moeketsi, pictured, was happy to vote at the Holy Family Preparatory School in Killarney, northern of Johannesburg.

"I didn't know that such prominent people were coming to vote here," said the jovial 23-year-old.

"The whole exercise felt so important and special."

She said she would not reveal which party she voted for, but said the campaigns by some political parties "were great and posed a challenge for the ANC".

Mbeki, accompanied by his wife Zanele, said retirement "was great".

"This is good for the country, everyone must vote according to their conscience for the future of the country.

"The campaigns were good and it was nice that political parties communicated their views to voters."
