For along time now, the image of Nigerians in South Africa has been a source of discourse.

Unfortunately, as always happens, the few rotten apples have given all Nigerians a bad name. And this worries Nigerian high commissioner to South Africa Mohammed Buba Marwa.

To encourage and applaud the many Nigerians who are doing good work, Marwa has launched the first inaugural annual Nigerians In South Africa Achievement Awards.

The awards will identify Nigerians across the country who have made remarkable achievements in diverse fields. The aim is to encourage other Nigerians to emulate them.

Categories under the spotlight are Best Entrepreneur - male, female and Nigerian Business of the Year.

Also up for grabs are:

Research: Best male and female. Arts and culture: Actor and actress of the year, best musician and musical group, best fashion designer, best artist.

Science and technology: Excellence in IT, medicine, invention, agriculture, sports. Achievements in soccer, athletics, wrestling, boxing, community development, job creation, philanthropy.

Other considerations will go towards the outstanding ethnic grouping, professional body or club, youth, most outstanding youth, academic, sports and music.

Also up for grabs is the high commissioner's award for excellence and the consul-general award for excellence.

Besides these many awards, other outstanding Nigerians will also be recipients of plaques, certificates of honour and prizes, Marwa says.
