An 18-year-old robber was shot and wounded during a break-in at a house in Florida, west of Johannesburg, paramedics said yesterday.

Three men held up a family on Janet Street at gunpoint at 8pm on Wednesday night, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman.

The thieves were trying to escape in the family's car when the homeowner shot one of them in the neck.

"He showed signs of spinal injuries - loss of sensation, and was taken to hospital where he is under police guard."

The rest of the would-be thieves fled the scene on foot. Nobody else was injured. - Sapa
