A man who had been on the run from police after allegedly shooting his wife dead in cold blood on Sunday night has been found dead.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Daniella Veldhuizen said the incident happened after the 26-year-old woman had visited her boyfriend in Pinetown.
"While there, her estranged husband came into the boyfriend's rented room unannounced.
"The couple was allegedly on separation pending divorce although the husband had apparently not consented to the divorce.
"The husband wanted his wife to accompany him back to his house in Umlazi township but both the boyfriend and the wife objected. This lead to a stand-off between the parties," Veldhuizen said.
She said it was at this stage that the boyfriend insisted that all three of them sit outside his rented room until the morning when the woman would take a taxi back home.
"The three were sitting outside the rented room when the husband went to his car parked nearby, allegedly to fetch his jacket.
"It is alleged that when the man came back, he shot his wife several times at close range in front of the boyfriend who ran into his room fearing for his life.
"The husband allegedly drove off, leaving his dead wife outside the boyfriend's room," she said.
Veldhuizen said that the husband was "found dead after committing suicide".
Veldhuizen said he committed suicide on Tuesday by allegedly using the same weapon assumed to have been used to murder the woman.
No foul play is suspected at this stage.
The weapon will be send for ballistic tests," she said.
