Good news for those living in the Zululand sistrict municipality is that there will be no tariff increases for residents in the new financial year.

District mayor Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi, pictured above , said the executive committee of her district municipality had turned down the tariff increase for water and sanitation because most of northern KwaZulu-Natal residents were poor, unemployed and staying in deep rural areas.

"We have taken this important decision in order to limit the effects of cross-subsidisation by local businesses, as well as the impact of the global recession and of the credit crunch," said KaMagwaza-Msibi.

She added that the decision not to increase the tariffs would benefit residents of Ulundi, Nongoma, Edumbe and Pongola.
