How long does milk last past its sell by date?
The answer really depends on whether you live in a hot climate. If you do you'll find that your milk expires before the use by date as the process of opening and closing the refrigerator door lets in hot bursts of air. These frequent bursts of warm air contribute to a faster rate of product deterioration. If your outside climate is very warm and you open your fridge door even for 10 seconds, the air inside your fridge will dramatically warm up. Your refrigerator then has to work hard to cool the fridge again back to its set temperature.
Another variable is transportation.
The very best gauge of telling whether your milk is still good to drink, is by smelling it. Good milk should barely smell, and if it does smell it should smell sweet. Usually, the stronger the smell the older the milk is. As soon as it starts to get chunky, it is old and should be discarded.
