Searching for unsung heroes

In our world of big names, our true heroes tend to be anonymous.

These are the profound words of American author Daniel J Boorstin, who has added that "... in this life of illusion and quasi-illusion, the person of solid virtues who can be admired for something more substantial than his 'well-knowness' often proves to be the unsung hero: the teacher, the nurse, the mother, the honest cop, the hard worker at lonely, underpaid, 'unglamorous', 'unpublicised' jobs ..."

These words about the anonymity of the true heroes among us holds true about a local campaign - Sunday World Heroes - that seeks to recognise and acknowledge individuals we may be passing, ignoring or isolating in the taxi or bus queues, shopping malls and informal business stalls. This campaign is a nation-building partnership project of Sunday WorldBusiness and Eazytime.

Sunday World business editor Mzwandile Kabizokwakhe and Eazytime CEO Richard Ndlela would like readers and all nation-building people throughout South Africa to join the search for the Sunday World Hero.

In answering who is the typical Sunday World Hero, KabBizokwakhe said: "The Sunday World Hero is a young businessperson who runs a registered and legal business - either as a not-for-gain entity or profit-making enterprise that benefits the surrounding community."

He said these candidates should ideally be operating in areas such as community development, healthcare, poverty alleviation and education.

Kabizokwakhe added: "If you believe that with a little heads-up from us you could do even more to help others, tell us in 500 words or less how R50000 could achieve that. Don't forget to include all your relevant registration details."

Each week for seven weeks, the best and most convincing cases will be chosen as finalists.

All weekly winners and the date of the gala dinner to announce the overall winner will be published on June 5.
