All Gauteng's high schools are invited to participate in the Smart Young Mindz Challenge.

This corporate social responsibility programme of Blue IQ is supported by the Gauteng department of education (GDE) and Sowetan, which has made the challenge a youth development activity of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

It encourages Grades 8, 9 and 10 pupils to study maths, physical science and technology. The challenge is aligned to the curriculum.

Pupils are also encouraged to investigate economic development, alternative and renewable energy generation and entrepreneurship challenges in their communities and to generate ideas for products or services that will fill a gap in the market that could become commercially viable.

Its 15 regional eliminations are coordinated and managed by GDE district officials.

Principals or subject teachers should submit entries on behalf of pupils who must not be older than 18 years. The three best ideas of each region will go through to the finals, which will be judged at an awards expo .

Contestants will be pitting their wits, skills and talents against one another for a whopping R112500. The top three prizes are:

l 1st prize - R45000 (R7500 per pupil and R7500 for their school);

l 2nd prize - R30000 (R5000 per pupil and R5000 for their school);

l 3rd prize - R15000 (R2500 per pupil and R2500 for their school).

An additional R500 per finalists' team, translating to R1500 per region, will go towards improving participants' projects before the final adjudication

The University of Johannesburg-affiliated Metropolitan Raucall caters for selected high school pupils from disadvantaged communities who demonstrate potential for success in studies at higher education institutions.

A total of 107 distinctions - particularly in maths, science, economics and accounting - were earned last year.

Metropolitan Raucall currently accommodates more than 500 pupils from Grade 8 to 12, with a fixed curriculum of seven subjects.
