KwaZulu-Natal has launched the first provincial 2010 World Cup website.

Members of the Fifa Local Organising Committee led by chief executive Danny Jordaan attended the glittering event at the Golden Horse Casino in Pietermaritzburg last week.

They were hosted by economic development MEC and chairperson of the provincial 2010 committee Zweli Mkhize, Umgungundlovu mayor Yusuf Bhamjee and Durban city manager Mike Sutcliffe.

The website will inform soccer fans about preparations for the World Cup and provide tourists with information about accommodation and leisure places in the province. The website was launched to the blare of vuvuzelas as Jordaan, Mkhize and Sutcliffe jointly hit the button to put the project online.

Jordaan said there was a huge demand for tickets from overseas visitors.

"Tickets could be sold out soon and it's important for our people to buy the tickets in time to avoid disappointments.

"And in a few months we will be hosting the Confederations Cup and we also need our people to participate there. Buying tickets in time is the best option," he said.

Jordaan added that the tourism sector would benefit from the extravaganza.

"It seems the global economic crisis is not going to affect our visitors."

He said South Africa's World Cup would be the first to provide coverage in new high-definition television technology and matches could also be watched on cellphones.

Mkhize said the event gave South Africa a platform to develop infrastructure that would serve future generations.
