The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has promised to prioritise the fight against crime by increasing the SAPS personnel from 24000 to 52000. The DA also promised to bring back the commando system to improve safety if it were to win the province.

Launching its provincial manifesto in Durban yesterday, the DA offered KZN voters a "viable" alternative.

Councillor John Steenhuisen said his party had demonstrated that it was the best-performing opposition party in the country, and singled out Cape Town as the best-run municipality.

"The election in our province is a contest between two political philosophies, which have significantly different outcomes for the future of our province and our people.

"These two philosophies are the closed patronage system of the ANC and the open opportunity system of the DA," he said.

Steenhuisen said the DA would work tirelessly to wrest the streets back from criminals .
