It is with great sadness that Violet Seboni - our comrade, shop steward, colleague and friend - has passed away.

I believe that Seboni and myself epitomised a constructive relationship between management and workers. This had resulted in a mutually beneficial outcome for the whole business enterprise.

We started our journey in the turbulent late 1980s when she was still an inexperienced, newly elected shop steward. I was also an inexperienced manager trying to deal with labour issues.

We grew together, often disagreeing but always resolving our differences.

We often empowered each other, and also respected and acknowledged the different roles we had to fulfil.

Over time, with the knowledge we acquired, we were able to trust each other.

That is why it was vital that her skills and talents be used to pursue her passion for workers' rights. Hence she was elected Cosatu deputy president.

We are proud of her accomplishments and of the role we played together in forging labour peace and development.

On the other hand, I will miss her, not only as a colleague but also as a friend.

On behalf of all who worked at Supreme Hat & Cap, I would like to extend heartfelt sympathies and condolences to her daughters and family during this difficult time.

I also extend the same sentiments to thestructures of the unions she had represented.
