Inkatha Freedom Party councillor in Nongoma Jomo Ndwandwe, who has been forced to hide in the mountains for fear of his life, has asked the police to provide him with security.

His plea comes after a failed ambush on Tuesday afternoon.

Sowetan reported on Friday about the attacks at his home in Bhanganoma after death threats he had received from unknown people.

Since the incident, Ndwandwe has been turned a "hermit" as he had to seek refuge in the mountains.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday at Nongoma police station where he was reporting the latest attack, Ndwandwe said he had just left a garage on Tuesday afternoon when he was attacked.

"I was with my wife, driving towards my home when three men suddenly sprang out from nowhere. One of them fired shots towards us and I had to swerve to the side of the road for cover.

"Fortunately he missed and we were lucky enough that the car did not cause an accident or anything like that. I thank God that I survived the shooting," he said.

Ndwandwe said he was left with no choice but to seek protection from the police.

"I fear for my life and I don't know what I have done to these people who want me dead."

Nongoma police confirmed that a complaint had been reported and would be investigated.
