Council books under scrutiny

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for local government and traditional affairs Mike Mabuyakhulu has appointed independent forensic investigators to scrutinise the financial affairs and other irregularities of the Umhlabuyalingana municipality.

Spokesperson for the department Mthatheni Mabaso confirmed yesterday that Mabuyakhulu, pictured , had launched an investigation into the affairs of the municipality.

"Once our investigation is completed, and if it is found that there was money swindled, we will take action against the people concerned. We have dealt harshly with other municipalities in the past five years," Mabaso said.

Mabuyakhulu's actions come after Sowetan reported allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the municipality.

It is alleged that IFP mayor Dompasi Ncube, speaker Lindani Ngubani and municipal manager Eric Manqele had "colluded to authorise the payment of more than R3million to companies before commencing their duties".

An ANC statement said the party was shocked to learn that over R3million earmarked for service delivery had been diverted. "To date no one can account for R6million that went missing in uMkhanyakude, R40million in eDumbe and millions in Enquthu."
