The ANC and its alliance partners in KwaZulu-Natal used Monday's celebrations in Durban to lambast Archbishop Desmond Tutu for his comments against a Jacob Zuma presidency.

The end of Zuma's fight with the NPA was greeted with a celebration at Curries Fountain.

Cosatu provincial secretary Zet Luzipho took a swipe at Tutu, saying the cleric must also know that he is not God.

"The archbishop has forgotten that even Jesus Christ was prosecuted and persecuted despite Pontius Pilate having found no crime against Him.

"Pilate had made it clear that Jesus was innocent, but the corrupt people like Tutu went on to prosecute him. The same has happened to Zuma. We have been saying he is innocent, and Judge Chris Nicholson found no crime against him, but still the Tutus of this world went ahead to try and prosecute him," said Luzipho.

ANC NEC member and MEC for community safety and liaison Bheki Cele also lashed out at Tutu, labelling him "a hypocrite".

He also criticised IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, saying he was the last person to talk about a "dark cloud hanging over the head of Zuma".

"Buthelezi must first answer about the weapons that (former IFP strongman) Phillip Powell planted and those that were used to kill people," said Cele.

ANC NEC member Yolanda Young called for Zuma's presidency to clean up the justice system after the elections.
