More than 20 percent of job seekers in SA have criminal records.

The offences range from murder, rape and armed robbery to petty crime and white- collar fraud.

Vhonani Mufamadi, the CEO of the Ideco Group, said criminal record percentages had spiked over the past 18 months.

"The criminal re-cords rate of 20 percent plus is among the world's highest. Since the economic downturn, more white-collar crimes are expected. We advise employers to use the system to detect risk in their firms," Mufamadi said.

Criminal records are not the only ones applicants lie about - they lie about degrees and other documents, said Ina van der Merwe of SA's background screening firm Kroll.
