Adhil Ramnath and Zamile Dlamini did not allow deafness to thwart their dream of qualifying with a national diploma in information technology at Durban University of Technology this month.
Ramnath attended the VN Naik School for the Deaf from preschool to matric. As a baby he contracted German measles, which caused his deafness.
Dlamini, from Estcourt, became deaf at eight months after an illness. She attended KwaThinthwa School for the Deaf from preschool to Grade 8. She finished her schooling at Fulton School for the Deaf.
They are both looking for jobs as programmers or database administrators. Both plan to study further and hope to open their own businesses later.
Both advise young deaf students to do well at school so they can the earn college or university qualifications.
