Workers at City to City and Translux coaches went back to work yesterday under new management.

The bus operations were scheduled to be taken over by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) from Autopax Passenger Services this month.

"The bus drivers, technical staff and everyone else is back at work. The strike has been suspended," said Assaria Mataboge, a spokesperson for the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu)

He said the new management had agreed to attend to the workers' grievances on condition that they abandon the strike.

The strike was deemed illegal after Autopax obtained a court interdict against the workers.

"We have agreed with the new management that employees would not be disciplined when they return to work.

"We are looking forward to engaging them to try and resolve our issues," said Mataboge.

"Perhaps we will have a better understanding with the incoming management."

Thousands of passengers were left stranded last weekend because of the strike. Most took refunds and made alternative travelling plans.
