To some people, happiness is a state of mind. To Dinah Adonis, happiness is a way of life, especially when she is doing her favourite thing - feeding the poor.
Her selfless dedication to the poor was recognised recently when she was announced winner of the Clarins Most Dynamisante Woman of the Year. She also walked away with a cheque for R150000.
Overwhelmed by emotions, Adonis said: "I never thought in my wildest dreams that one day I will get such an honour. It feels very good when others recognise what you do."
Adonis and seven women founded Women for Change, an organisation to feed vulnerable children and other community members of Nellmapius near Pretoria.
Her project at Lesedi Baptist Church runs a soup kitchen for more than 300 children twice a week, offers aftercare and helps with the children's homework. Alongside the church is a greenhouse-style vegetable garden where spinach, tomatoes, cauliflower and other vegetables are grown for the children's soup.
"It is strenuous," admits Adonis, a former nurse who migrated from East London to Pretoria in 2001. She says it is in her to help others.
"I used to suffer from severe hypertension but now I'm healthy because I'm doing what I love," she says.
She said she started Women for Change to realise her dream of seeing women lead the country and "put everything right" some day.
She said her prize money would be used to build a big prefab that would act as a community centre.
