Deputy President Baleka Mbete and Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu opened an R8billion housing project at Blythedale, outside KwaDukuza, on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast.
The Blythedale Coastal Resort became possible after a landmark land claim resolution spanning more than two years between the department of land affairs, the Dube community and the Stewart family that have been living and owning the farm for 125 years.
Just 60 minutes north of Durban, this exciting 1000 hectare integrated resort development is one of the first to incorporate a social housing component within its boundaries.
The project will include 5000 low-cost houses, schools, a hotel, golf course and affordable housing units.
Yesterday Mbete hailed the project as something the government has been trying to do for a long time - to have black and white people staying together.
"It is something that has never been seen before where ordinary black people will stay in an area that was predominantly occupied by white people, next to the beaches and the sea," she said.
Sisulu gave credit to other stakeholders involved in the project, among them developers of the resort eLan Group, and Breaking New Ground Plan.
Every owner and registered tenant resident in the village will be a member of the resort association and will have access to the resort and its facilities, as much as other association members and residents.
