The centre is run by Winnie Bosman, last year's regional winner of the Sowetan Community Builder of the Year.
The centre looks after the residents of Reiger Park and of Joe Slovo, Tokyo Sexwale, Ramaphosa and Kalamazoo informal settlements.
"I was retrenched 10 years ago and I did not know where to turn. My life fell to pieces and there was no one to help me," said Bosman.
"I realised that we needed an advice centre to help people in need. At the time I was doing volunteer work with the elderly and I arranged for them to receive their pensions while sitting comfortably in a hall."
Another group took over caring for the elderly when Bosman and other volunteers went on a government-sponsored training in HIV-Aids counselling.
The centre's 34 caregivers identify orphans and vulnerable children. They secure grants for the children and check on their wellbeing in families that have taken them in. At present the number stands at 500 and the whole group is fed twice a week at the centre.
"We are part of the Extended Public Works Programme. We now have four auxiliary social workers and a lifeline which operates through the policestation," Bosman said.
"We need a drop-in centre which we hope will offer music, art, speech and drama to take the children off the streets.
"We care for 10 terminally ill patients who prefer to be treated at home. HIV-Aids is still a secretive issue and if patients do not undergo counselling, they refuse to treat the disease."
