The Greater Letaba municipality will spend a big chunk of its next capital development budget on street lights in crime hot spots.
Mayor Joshua Matlou said yesterday that lights would go up in Lebaka, Phaphadi, Mamphakgathi and Sekgosese villages and more would be installed at GaKgapane township.
Matlou tabled the municipality's R1145million budget for 2009/10 at a special council sitting at Itireleng village in Sekgosese near Modjadjiskloof on Tuesday night.
"We are going to light up crime hot spots in our villages ... to create a safer living environment and to build a crime-free society," he said.
Matlou said the Department of Minerals and Energy had contributed R10million to electrify 2600 homes in 21 villages, including Rotterdam, Roerfontein, Maphalle, Lemondokop, Itumeleng Extension 4 and Sephukhubje.
The municipality has just completed a R4million electrification project at Modjadji Valley, Sekgopo, Kgapane, Senwamokgope and Raphahlelo.
