Agriculture MEC Dikeledi Magadzi has urged women in Limpopo to seize the many opportunities available to them in agriculture.

The sector offered "too many opportunities", she said, but "sissies were likely not to make it in the field".

"Women must do away with the perception that agriculture was for men," said Magadzi.

She said many opportunities were available for women with a passion for agriculture.

"It does not matter what background a woman has, or her age, what is important is to try TO empower as many women as possible in the agricultural sector," Magadzi said.

Magadzi was speaking at the Sowetan Women's Club at the Meropa Casino Conference Centre.

She said only determined women would succeed in agriculture. Those who pursue this career should strive to learn their business.

"Limpopo contributes 60percent of oranges that are exported. It is in this province where you also find tomatoes, mangoes, avocados and macadamia nuts," she boasted.

Six of the nine Female Farmer of the Year winners had come from Limpopo.
