The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union is taking former Cosatu head Willie Madisha to court over allegations he made that the union was misusing member funds.

Earlier this month, Madisha said Nehawu was misusing its members' funds to the tune of R20million and helping to fund the ANC's election campaign.

Nehawu confirmed yesterday that it would institute legal proceedings against Madisha for "tarnishing the honour and good name of the organisation".

"Nehawu can confirm that it has instructed its attorneys to proceed and institute legal proceedings against William Madisha for publicly making allegations against the union without providing evidence," the union said.

Nehawu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said the union was in the process of delivering summons to Madisha. He said the lawsuit did not only involve money as the union was also considering laying criminal defamation charges against Madisha.

Madisha yesterday denied any knowledge of the lawsuit.
