Followers of classical and orchestra music can look forward to enjoying themselves at Handel's Messiah.

The piece will be performed by the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and Symphony Choir. The entire event, which will be conducted by Richard Cock, will take place on April 12 at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton.

Composed in 1741 and premiered in Dublin, Ireland, on April 13 1742, Messiah is Handel's most famous composition and among the most popular works in Western choral literature. It includes the well-known Hallelujah Chorus.

The yearly performance of Handel's Messiah in true African style has become a must-do on the calendars of music lovers .

Sharon Swain, manager of Nelson Mandela Square, said: "The tradition continues and we again stage this treasured community event. As in the past, all proceeds go to Women for Peace, a nonprofit organisation that empowers grassroots communities through education, self-esteem and skills development."
