The man accused of killing his wife and three children had visited the local police station to report the attacks on the evening, the Thohoyandou high court heard yesterday.

Meshack Kharivhe, 38, stands accused of killing his wife Winisani, 27, Zwonaka, 9, Thendo, 3, and nine-month-old Maduvha at Mukula-Sathane village in April last year.

His brother Norman, a key witness in the trial, told the court that the accused visited him and asked him to take him to the police station as he had a problem that he wanted to tell the police.

"I drove with him but he never told me what he was going to report until we got into the police station.

"That's when he told police that he had killed his wife and kids," Norman told the stunned court.

The victims were murdered with a spade and a garden fork.

Kharivhe has already pleaded guilty on three counts - relating to his children's deaths - but denied responsibility for his wife's death. This was despite his confession that he had killed her and the children.

Pleading on Monday, Kharivhe said the kids knew nothing and he could not explain how and why they were killed.

Police said the former employee of the South African National Defence Force had accused his wife of cheating. He said d she sometimes told him the kids were not his.

The trial was postponed to Friday.
