Limpopo police at Seshego are investigating two cases of arson after two minibus taxis were burnt at GaMaleka village outside Polokwane at the weekend in what might be related to taxi violence in the province.
The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday when the two taxis, which were parked next to each other, were burnt to ashes by unknown suspects.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Mothemane Malefo said the owner of the two taxis discovered the burning vehicles when he went out of the house. He then alerted other members of the family.
"They tried to extinguish the fire but it was too late. The damage caused is estimated at R400000," he said.
According to Malefo, the motive for the incident is not known.
"There has never been any sign of taxi violence in the local association as far as we know," he said.
The taxi owner is the chairperson of the Moletji/Mmotong Taxi Association.
No one has been arrested yet, but police appealed to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects to contact the local police station.
