Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
Four policemen were surrounded by a ring of steel as they appeared in the Roodepoort magistrate's court for bail application on Friday.
A heavily armed group of police from the special task force kept a watchful eye in and around the court.
Head of the Krugersdorp organised crime unit, Senior Superintendent Dumisani Jwara, and captains Sakhephi Shange, Victor Jwili and Landro Mokgosane are facing charges of dealing in drugs, racketeering, fraud, theft and defeating the ends of justice.
Crime intelligence spokes-person Superintendent Tummi Golding said the officers took some of the consignments of drugs from crime scenes and sold them to drug lords around the country.
"Most of it was allegedly stolen from drugs which were seized at OR Tambo International Airport," she said.
Prosecutor advocate Michelle Bayat asked the court not to grant the officers bail as they pose risk to the security of witnesses.
"The accused are well connected and have the financial means to leave the country," she said.
Bayat said three of the accused had previous convictions of assault, reckless and negligent driving, and threatening a policeman with violence. The bail application will continue on 15 April.
The Crime Intelligence Covert Collection Directorate in Pretoria has been investigating the case since 2006.
